Welcome to "Dear World, I can do this." The musings of a housewife, student wife, Latter-day Saint, and individual (*GASP!* we can have an identity after marriage and motherhood?!!) . A place where we can talk about those things we always want to share with the world - A place to discuss great eats, share stories and other great tips, and enjoy successes. This is all about giving myself, and others, a VOICE.

We're a bit fruity...

Every day for lunch, The Hubs would usually grab a 10oz. fruit cup and a 'microwave' meal from Fresh & Easy. Both healthy, super tasty, and quick to just throw into his school bag. FANTASTIC solution for all of us.

Well, when the food bill started to get a bit higher than I would have liked, I decided to make my OWN fruit cups and then do the math to see what the difference in cost would be.

It turned out to be kind of a fun thing for us to do one Sunday afternoon because Mr. G could help, AND he got to snitch.

His job is pulling all the grapes off the vine, "One for the bowl, two for me, one for the bowl, two for me..."

Then he was in charge of scooping them into the bowls for the week-

This is what we resulted! This COST the same as 5 days worth of fruit from Fresh & Easy. Math below.

Cost difference:
5, 10oz. bowls at Fresh & Easy (TOTAL OF 50 oz.) = $12.50
4, 15.25 oz bowls, 9 13.25 oz. bowls, and one 3 lb. 14oz. bowl (TOTAL OF 242.25 oz) = $15.44

I purchased one watermelon, one honeydew, two cantaloupes, 2 lbs. of strawberries, and a bag of grapes for that. Sure it took some time, but now we ALL get some fruit to munch on, not just The Hubs! We are CONSTANTLY pulling these out and sharing them with company, or just using them for watching TV, or for lunches for the kids, etc. SO GREAT.

So PER OUNCE:
Fresh & Easy: $0.25/ounce
Home: $0.06/ounce

It took quite a bit of time, but it was the perfect afternoon activity that everybody could help in, and who doesn't love a kitchen full of fresh fruit?!

  1. If you pricematch at Walmart using the Self-Reliant Sisters blog, you could make it even cheaper! I like to go to the "green Walmart" on American Pacific and Stephanie, because they don't make you bring in your ads. I just copy the list from SRS into word, delete stuff I won't buy and bring it to Walmart with me. It's hard sometimes when kids are cranky when you're checking out, but it feels great to know you got tons of produce for pennies. Also, if you ever want to drop off kids to shop, especially Grant, my kids would gladly entertain him for an hour or two. Just call!
