I'm thinking about posting my weekly menu and shopping list...Takers?
However, if I do this, I don't put EVERY single item on the recipe on my shopping list. There's always those staples that are consistently in my fridge/kitchen so I thought I'd give y'all a peak at what we generally keep in stock around our house:
1. Skim Milk. Yes, I know, "colored water" or whatever my family always harasses me about. BUT, in the end it still has the same amount of nutrients and calcium as whole milk with half the calories, no saturated fat, etc. If you were giving up your daily Twinkies for whole milk, then fine, but if you're going to eat Twinkies AND have whole milk it's going to be an uphill battle to lose weight...I'm just sayin'...
2. Low fat sour cream (& cottage cheese if we ever use it in a recipe).
3. Hodgson Mill whole wheat flour (FANTASTIC in waffles).
4. Oil flask of half olive oil and canola oil (because canola oil has a better ratio of Omega 6 and Omega 3's, but olive oil is the better 'fat').You can buy it already mixed in stores, but it costs like twice what it does to just mix yourself.
5. CardioChoice Buttery Spread (aka margarine high in omegas, this is just the cheapest alternative to others we've used
6. Bananas & Apples (and any other seasonal fruit to grab and snack on). We've also enjoyed either pre-cutting and sorting grapes, melons, strawberries, etc.
7. BirdsEye Steamfresh frozen veggies. LOOVE these. Any will do. I don't particularly like the "sauced" ones though. They're so quick and easy to just throw in the microwave-
8. Fresh & Easy pita bread and hummus. Definitely a new favorite snack. High in fiber, and I love how light and soft their pita bread is. The hummus at Trader Joe's and Costco (Cilantro/Jalapeno) I like a little better, but for the sake of consolidating trips I just get the stuff there. We like to mix the lemon/cilantro and spicy jalapeno from F&E too. The big bonus to this is our 3 yr. old loves this stuff too! He likes the lemon/cilantro one the best...
9. Any brand of frozen berries or a frozen berry mix. Fantastic for just throwing together a smoothie and our 7 month old LOOVES to suck on them in her "fresh food feeder" (aka safe feeder- I HIGHLY recommend this! Just not for bananas...). We also like to keep fresh blackberries in the fridge just to snack on. Our 3 yr. old will eat them like popcorn!
I'll have a poll up- Let me know if you're interested in our weekly menu/shopping list.
Have a great weekend!
