"You are today where your thoughts have brought you; you will be tomorrow where your thoughts take you." - James Allen
My biggest "beast" is my own brain.
I've discovered my largest distraction is the computer (big surprise...). And I always wonder to the computer when my brain is bored. I'll be doing dishes or something productive, have nothing to think about and my brain will wonder to somebody random and then I'll think, "Hmm...I wonder if they______" and go see on Facebook. And then be there for 20 minutes until I realize that it was a retarded diversion and go back to what I was doing in the first place.
It is VERY inefficient.
So I happened to click on a conference talk during one of these FB diversions and listen to it last night and realized, "WOAH! I got a lot done having something to listen to!"
Upon further thought I realized why I always get distracted so easily- I have nothing really contemplative going on in my brain to keep me occupied while I'm working. So I tried another talk and "ta-dum!" kitchen CLEAN!
It was magic.
So I'm going to try an experiment and do this every night after the kids are in bed and while The Hubs is studying-
It'll be great practice for me! It seems as though my attention span has been conditioned to match that of my kids, so that I can anticipate when they're losing interest in something. So come time for Relief Society my mind wonders about 10 minutes into the lesson- Which is about Mr. G's attention span too.
My brain needs the exercise!
I also realized how truly unfortunate it is that I don't have anything to think about really in the first place! I am understanding the power behind our thoughts. So I also want to increase my brain potential, which will also hopefully translate into my goal for the 5K/running. Also one of my biggest challenges in running: My brain gets bored and so I stop earlier than I initially wanted to.
So this experiment is to test the following:
1. If I am more productive when listening to some sort of conference talks, or any other uplifting/motivating speeches.
2. If my thoughts/actions are made more positive and productive.
3. If my attention span is increased (I have to really focus on listening and following these talks! No mentally checking out 10 minutes in).
4. Test if my mental strength in exercising is increased.
5. If having the mental break from thinking about everything I need to do/watch/buy/budget/etc. is helpful to my later mental productivity.
Want to join the experiment? Let me know if you're "playing along" and I'd love to have a few "guest commentary" about their own results!
My first suggested talk/speech?
Enjoy!

I'll do my best to add a new "Daily Talk" to listen to, hopefully it'll help things stay simple.
The world we have created is a product of our thinking; it cannot be changed without changing our thinking.- Albert Einstein
Awesome post! I love it. When I used to go to the gym in Daybreak, I always took the Ensign and read while on the elliptical. I exercised my mind/spirit and body simultaneously. Unfortunately, my home elliptical doesn't have a ledge to perch a book or magazine on. :( I'll have to try the book on tape idea.
ReplyDeleteIt's a wonderful idea! I have downloaded the scriptures and a Charles Dickens book onto my ipod to listen to while I'm doing dishes, making bread, or folding laundry. It really does make a huge difference.
