Welcome to "Dear World, I can do this." The musings of a housewife, student wife, Latter-day Saint, and individual (*GASP!* we can have an identity after marriage and motherhood?!!) . A place where we can talk about those things we always want to share with the world - A place to discuss great eats, share stories and other great tips, and enjoy successes. This is all about giving myself, and others, a VOICE.

The Ever Evolving Food-Losiphy, part 1.

So my current philosophy on what it means to be a "good" eater or a "healthy" eater is ever changing.

There are SOOO many sites and information out there. Some great, some bad. And just when I think I'm gaining my opinion on something, I read something that makes my head spin and I have to re-think it all over again. It's so overwhelming, and I find the more I learn, the more I realize how much I don't understand!

Then there are articles like, "Embrace the Fat" which are so informative and legit in appearance that trying to understand truth from extremism is like trying to pull marbles out of a toddlers nose. Hard, and obnoxious.
{Tangent: In regards to the article I just mentioned, it is very interesting, and my hubby the science geek who is currently in P.A. school read over it. There is a lot of truth to it, however a lot of the sources are not entirely credible or what I'd call an 'expert' in the field. aka journalists. Maybe later I'll do a commentary on it, but for now, just let your head spin with all the mumbo jumbo...}

I think in all of my learning and exploring and experimenting so far, my food-losiphy can be summed up as follows:
  • There is moderation in all things.
  • Moderation in fats.
  • Moderation in sugars.
  • Moderation in processed foods, especially high fructose corn syrups and the like. It's in EVERYTHING. No, I don't think it'll kill me. But like I said, moderation in all things, and it's hard to find moderation if it's everywhere.
  • And there's no such thing as moderation in "naked" (meaning raw) veggies & fruits.
  • If you have a healthier choice, take it.
  • Don't be a psycho extremist, because that's annoying and just makes me want to rebel. If you start preaching to me about how horrible it is to eat meat, I promise you, I will have a big fat steak that night and teach my kid how to say, "Mmmm....cow..." next time we see you. Trust me...It's happened.
  • Grains are great.
  • Eat healthy for the right reasons, not for vanity. Because in the end you're just going to fail.
  • It's not like you're going to die or throw the earth off its axis if you have a cheeseburger or a soda every once in a while. It's ok to let yourself indulge every so often without needing to go spend 4 extra hours at the gym. BALANCE!
So what's YOUR food-losiphy?

  1. I like your thinking! I feel the same way. I especially think we should eat fewer processed foods.

  2. My food-losiphy isn't all that dissimilar to yours with one main exception. Just like there's no moderation in raw fruits and veggies, there's no moderation in sugar, just in the opposite sense, no matter how you slice or dice it, sugar is BAD bad news, and we (as a culture) eat way too much of it and more than ever before. So I avoid it, really really avoid it. Stevia has become my best friend.

  3. I'm reading this book called "Fat, It's not what you think" by Connie Leas. You should read it, it will blow your mind! It's also a bit more scientific than the above article. ;)
